It doesn't read as if it changed its clothes three time before lunch. What you've done here is tough to do, create horror and suspense without resorting to fantasy. In fact, the neat thing about this story is that you lead us to think it could be many things, It could be supernatural, natural, a mistake, a prank, it turns out to be far more serious. And it heightens the suspense when the mc doesn't know anything either.
